Tai Kwun - Private Tour
(Former Central Police Station Compound)
Tai Kwun, located in the bustling commercial center of Hong Kong Island, is a remarkable transformation of the former Central Police Station, Central Magistracy, and Victoria Prison. Established by the British after 1841, this walled compound is one of Hong Kong’s most significant historic monuments. Following its decommissioning in 2006, the site has been revitalized into an urban oasis amidst the city's dense high-rises, offering a unique blend of heritage and contemporary culture.
Herzog & de Meuron, the Design Architect, preserves the openness and distinct character of the Parade Ground and the Prison Yard, reactivating them as vibrant spaces for public gathering, cultural exchange, and leisure. The new architectural additions, JC Contemporary and JC Cube, are thoughtfully integrated into the historic fabric, enhancing the site's cultural programming while respecting its historical context.
Join Helen Ng, Studio Director of the Hong Kong office of Herzog & de Meuron, for an exclusive tour of Tai Kwun. Helen will provide unique insights into the site's transformation and its role as a center for heritage and arts. This tour offers a fascinating exploration of Tai Kwun's past and present, showcasing its innovative blend of history and contemporary design.
